Dental Instruments

Explorers

The explorer is a dental tool used to examine the teeth for decay, calculus, furcations and other abnormalities. It got its name because of its help in exploring the mouth looking for possible issues that might be troubling a patient without being too intrusive.

This dental explorers we mentioned, specifically the explorer 17 and explorer 23, are commonly used dental instruments known as dental explorers or periodontal explorers. They are frequently used by dental professionals during oral examinations to detect dental caries (cavities), calculus (tartar), and other irregularities on the tooth surfaces.

1. Dental Explorer 17: Explorer 17, also known as the “Shepherd’s Hook” explorer, is a dental instrument with a long, thin, curved tip that resembles a hook. 2. Dental Explorer 23: Explorer 23, also known as the “Cowhorn” explorer, has a curved dual-ended tip with a more pronounced curve than the Shepherd’s Hook explorer. The two ends of the explorer have different shapes, with one end resembling a cow’s horn and the other end being more pointed. The Cowhorn explorer is designed to access different areas of the teeth and detect dental caries and calculus deposits. The pointed end can be used to feel for tooth decay, while the cow’s horn end is effective in locating calculus deposits along the tooth surfaces.

Both explorers, 17 and 23, are commonly used to gently glide over the tooth surfaces, detecting any irregularities or signs of decay or calculus buildup. Dental professionals apply light pressure with the explorer’s tip, feeling for changes in texture and potential areas of concern.
